The Role of Teachers’ Knowledge of Functions in Their Teaching: A Conceptual Approach With Illustrations From Two Cases

We investigate whether and how personal mathematical knowledge at an advanced level impacts on teaching at a lower school level. We study this in the context of functions because understanding them permeates secondary and advancedmathematics. Textbook treatment of these can be patchy, implying a need for knowledgeable teachers to rectify weaknesses. A small observational study of two mathematically well-qualified teachers, teaching at a range of levels, leads to a deeper understanding of how their personal mathematical knowledge is manifested in their teaching. Finally, we present a theory of pedagogy combining dual development, intellectual necessity, and repeated experience of reasoning, for which these teachers’ practices provide illustrations. Résumé: Nous nous interrogeons sur l’influence qu’exerce un niveau de connaissance avancé des mathématiques sur l’enseignement aux niveaux scolaires inférieurs. Nous analysons cette question dans le contexte des fonctions parce que la compréhension des fonctions est omniprésente au niveau secondaire et en mathématiques avancées. Le traitement des fonctions dans les manuels est inégal, ce qui implique la nécessité pour les enseignants qualifiés d’en corriger les faiblesses. Grâce à l’observation de deux enseignants de mathématiques hautement qualifiés, qui enseignent à différents niveaux, nous sommes en mesure de mieux comprendre comment leur niveau personnel de connaissance des mathématiques se manifeste dans leur enseignement. Enfin, nous présentons une théorie pédagogique qui associe le développement duel, la nécessité intellectuelle et l’expérience répétée du raisonnement, dont ces deux enseignants fournissent plusieurs illustrations.
